6 50-KNOT MONSTER
Otam’s new 70HT promises a top speed of close to 50 knots and some of the most aggressive styling we’ve seen in years.
Designed by Otam’s in-house team, led by CEO and former powerboat racing champion, Gianfranco Zanoni, but with naval architecture by Umberto Tagliavini and an interior by BG Design Firm, it has both the pedigree and the looks to cut it in the rarified world of large offshore performance boats.
Constructed from an ultra-sturdy composite rather than light but unforgiving carbonfibre, the hull features a modified deep-vee with a deadrise angle of 21˚at the transom for fast offshore cruising, even in rough waters. The propulsion choices are similarly muscular – twin MAN V12-2000s (2000hp) or twin MTU 12V2000M96LS (1,920bhp) diesels, hooked up to Arneson surface-drives with special props co-developed by Rolla and Otam.
Two standard layouts are offered, both with an owner’s cabin forward under that long foredeck. One has two ensuite guest cabins amidships, a slightly larger double to port and a smaller twin-bunk to starboard with a micro-galley just ahead of it. The alternative proposes just one double guest cabin with ensuite to port and a more substantial galley and lounge arrangement to starboard. A small crew cabin is tucked into the bow with a tender garage at the stern for a Williams Turbojet 285.
The first 70HT is already under construction at Otam’s yard and should launch next spring. The ball-park price of €4.2m excludes taxes and guarantees both exclusivity and one of the most distinctive profiles on the water.
