We’re big fans of the Palm Beach range at MBY. In fact, this boat’s smaller sibling, the GT50, collected the gong for sports-cruiser over 40ft at this year’s Motor Boat Awards.
The 60, launched at the Miami Yacht Show in February, inherits similar principles to the 50, with a focus on weight-saving, fuel efficiency and sea keeping. Though there is a rigorous eye on dynamics, the boat is wrapped in an achingly beautiful package.
With a vacuum-infused carbon fibre deck and superstructure, relatively slender hull and 2,000hp from twin IPS1350 engines, the 60 is likely to be an effortless cruising machine. A top speed of 40 knots should make fast passage-making in the mid to late 30s possible.
To optimise weight distribution the motors are mounted further forward than normal and connected to the IPS pods by carbon fibre jack-shafts, hence the reason a full beam owner’s cabin can’t be accommodated amidships . The interior is still comfortable though, with two generous double cabins both with their own ensuite; the décor is a festival of high-end timbers.
Having the galley on the lower deck won’t suit everyone but one of Palm Beach’s strengths is its willingness to embrace customisation, so if clients require layout adjustments they can usually be accommodated.
Not many yards are building boats with such a close eye on dynamics these days; this and the GT60’S sumptuous retro curves set it apart.
