SAVVY NAVVY BOAT APP

Founded by former Google software engineer Jelte Liebrand, Savvy Navvy was established in 2017 to “make marine navigation safer and easier for everyone and remove traditional barriers to boating, enabling more people to get out and enjoy time on the water”.

The idea is to combine information that usually requires a plethora of sources into one user-friendly resource. So as well as integrated charts, the app also includes distance calculations, tide heights and streams (the latter particularly useful for things like working out when the tide is slackest for rounding challenging headlands) and weather forecasts.

The result is the ability to plan an entire trip, or simply check charts, tide and weather, before heading out to sea. All you need to do is open the chart, hit the ‘routing’ icon, zoom in and tap your start point and any waypoints and your destination then hit ‘plot route’ and it will give you predicted weather, tidal streams and even a course to steer. There’s even anchorage and marina information.

Savvy Navvy’s first app launched in 2018, targeting the sailing market. The latest version, just launched, is aimed at motor boaters, so it allows you to enter settings such as cruising speed and fuel efficiency and in return it will display predicted fuel usage, distance, arrival time, Course Over Ground, Speed Over Ground and routing details. Clever stuff!
