CASIO G-SHOCK MTG-B2000PH

-

It’s been said before that at the very top of the mythical but much quoted list of ‘things that will survive the apocalypse’ we find cockroaches, the K11 version of the Nissan Micra (an aunt of mine is now well past 20 years of putting that theory to a thorough test) and surely deserving of a top billing: the Casio G-shock watch.

And like the cockroach (and arguably Aunty’s battered K11), G-shock watches are known for their function-over-form styling.

Fit for purpose they are – elegant they are not.

But Casio’s latest G-shock bucks that trend by being really rather, well, funky! The new MTG-B2000PH features a design motif ‘inspired by the Blue Phoenix of mythical lore, a bird of Eastern mythology said to bear auspicious tidings – and it has rainbow ion plating on the bezel and case’. Apparently Casio utilises ion plating, with laser engraving techniques, and new materials to create this kind of totally original design and look.

Whatever the design team are smoking doesn’t seem to have filtered down to the engineering department, however, because the watch is pure G-shock underneath. Triple G Resist means that it is shock-resistant, centrifugal force-resistant and vibration-resistant, and it is waterproof to 200 metres. Radio wave time calibration ensures that it is always absolutely spot on, and it also features automatic time adjustment when paired with a smartphone using a dedicated app, adjusting to local time when crossing time zones without requiring the wearer to do anything.

Solar power augments the rechargeable battery, creating up to 29 months of continuous operation and other functions include (deep breath): Mobile Link functions (Automatic Connection, automatic time adjustment, easy watch setting, world time in over 300 cities, phone finder, watch status display, self-check function); auto hand home position correction; hand shift feature; daily alarm; dual time (27 time zones, home time swapping, auto summer time

[DST] switching); power saving; full auto-calendar; LED light (super illuminator and afterglow); day and date display.

With one of these and a K11, all you’ll need to worry about postapocalypse are the zombies.
