The Targa 50 belongs to Fairline’s sportscruiser range but with added refinement and all-year round comfort from its enclosed deck saloon. Original build quality is usually good and these boats can stand the test of time well, provided they have been well maintained.
Points to note when considering buying:
■ The opening roof sections are unusually large so inspect closely all corners and radii of A-frames, buttresses, roof sections and window reveals for evidence of stress crazing.
■ Ensure all tracks, battens, rollers and cars are kept scrupulously clean to ensure free and easy movement of the roof. Grease slapped on attracts salt and grit causing rapid deterioration in the sliding gear. These should be treated with dry Teflon spray.
■ The furniture modules, although well-constructed, are very square in sections, and as such can be caught or chipped.
Handholds in the large saloon area are limited.
■ Check for cracking around the radii of the mouldings for the glass hatches in the forecabin.
■ Check for evidence
of water ingress or staining in the lower cabins, often due to failed seals above.
■ Check that galvanic protection has been kept in good order, and that all anodes have been correctly fitted, and most importantly bonded to the sterngear.
■ Teak on the swim platform is often scrubbed out on vessels I have inspected. Check carefully for excessive scrubbing, graining and proud caulking.
■ If the boat is in the UK, check to see if it has been in the Med. If it has, especially if it’s blue, carefully check the gelcoat for evidence of UV degradation. Also check for failed gelcoat that may have been painted or wrapped.
■ Ensure engine service history is checked and verified including heat exchanger cleaning. A thorough sea trial is vital.
