SURVEYOR’S REPORT

-

The Botnia Targa range has carved a distinct niche for itself over the years with its range of fast wheelhouse cruisers. Safe walk-around decks with high gunwales and handholds are a major hallmark of this boat, and provide a most reassuring feel for all on board. The quality of the original build was good, too, and because they were bespoke they are limited in number, so prices remain high.

Points to note when considering buying:

■ The 25 has particularly small accommodation space, so ensure this can work for you. The upside is that you can have a flybridge for real ‘wind-in-the-hair’ fun.

■ With the ability to hit up to 45 knots check carefully for over-exuberant use. Despite the high quality of build, unsympathetic use can result in possible damage from slamming and pounding, and create stress crazing.

■ Those boats, despite quality materials, finished in dark blue can suffer from UV degradation of the gelcoat, depending on their environment. All blue gels tend to bloom over the years. Most of the time, the colour can be brought back with a professional compounding and polish. If not, then painting or vinyl wrapping would need to be budgeted for.

■ Check that the Volvo scheduled maintenance has been carried out to the DP leg. They require removal every two years, so ensure this is budgeted for.

■ It is critical to ensure that galvanic protection is sound and well bonded on the DP Drive. Check for evidence of corrosion on the skeg casing and/or signs of neglect.

■ If fitted with EVC Volvo electronic controls, these should be smooth when operating correctly – flybridge controls can get stiff with time via salt in the lever bushes.

■ Check the Volvo servicing history prior to purchase, not forgetting heat exchanger cleaning, crankcase breather filters etc. A thorough sea trial will highlight any issues. These are robust boats. Provided you find a good example, you should be delighted with its feel on the water.
