BMW reveals new C400X and GT

-

The German factory has just upgraded its two 400cc scooters, implementing the necessary Euro 5 engine updates and adding a host of new, even more sophisticated technology.

The BMW C400X was introduced back in 2017, before its touring ready brother the C400GT was released the following year. They’re both good, solid, sporty scooters with top performance and a premium finish – but there’s no denying that they were ready for an update.

And so that’s exactly what BMW has done for 2021 – giving both models a facelift in addition to bringing them in line with the recently enforced Euro 5 emissions regulations.

The one thing that needed to happen for 2021 was some engine tweaks to meet Euro 5. With the new regulations coming into force at the start of the year, manufacturers far and wide have been tasked with bringing their bikes and scooters in line with the emissions restrictions. It’s not always an easy job, particularly without reducing power and torque figures in the process.

As a result some clever solutions have appeared across the board to maintain output while reducing emissions at the same time. BMW’s done this by controlling its single cylinder motor using e-gas, equipping it with a new engine management system and fitting an optimised centrifugal clutch with stronger springs.

It also made changes to the exhaust gas cleaning system and the cylinder head too, to ensure the 350cc motor still kicks out 34hp of power and 35Nm of torque. Interestingly, peak torque is now reached a little sooner, at 5750rpm rather than 6000rpm. A new electronic throttle should also help to give the scooters a smoother and more sensitive throttle response and increased stability when idling. The changes don’t end there. There’re also new brake calipers gripping the twin discs up front, and some new lighting for the underseat storage compartment (which now also features a USB charging socket).

While the overall design of the scooters remain mostly unchanged, BMW has come up with a couple of new colour schemes and packages to help punters find a ride to best suit them. Available in UK dealers from June, the Blackstorm Metallic C400X will set you back £6545, while the Alpine White C 400 GT comes in at £7290.
