CONCEPT: Triumph’s Tiger 1200

The British factory has released another prototype Tiger, but this time it’s a big’un.

Blending the performance of the Speed Triple 1200 RS and the agility of the Tiger 900 Rally, the big Tiger that’s on the way looks like a serious bit of kit if off-road adventures are your thing. Triumph has made some bold claims, suggesting it’ll be more powerful and lighter than its closest competition.

At this stage there’s still not much official information available about the new Tiger 1200 for 2022, but looking at the photos and video released by the factory, we can be sure that the big adventure bike will be powered by the same 1160cc three-cylinder as the recently released flagship Speed Triple RS. We expect it’ll probably deliver power in a slightly different way, to make it more usable for longer journeys, so instead of the 180hp of the Speed Triple, we reckon it’ll offer (a still plentiful) 160hp. Chances are it’ll still get around 125Nm of peak torque, but it’ll probably be available lower down in the rev range (mainly for tractability off-road). From what we’ve seen, the Tiger 1200 will also get a 21-inch spoked wheel up front and a new tubular chassis.

We also expect it’ll share a lot of the same equipment and technological trickery as the Speed Triple 1200 RS, including an electronic throttle, a 6-axis IMU, a selection of rider modes, semi-active electronic suspension, cornering ABS, cornering traction control, anti-wheelie technology, hill start assist, cruise control, LED lights, self-cancelling indicators, Brembo Stylema brakes, and a swanky 5-inch TFT dash with smartphone connectivity.

We’ll have to sit tight for the confirmation though, with Triumph likely to drip-feed us more information over the coming months ahead of an official release later in the year.
