Check these points
Yamaha built the MT down to a price, so its suspension, plastics and paint are basic. Check coolant pipes, swingarm and plated parts.
The first bikes came without ABS but the system is a big plus point on a used example. Ignore bikes without it – unless you’re only doing track days.
The 690cc parallel twin with its 270- degree crank is trouble free but make sure it’s been serviced. First 600 miles, then 6000 miles, 12,000 and so on.
Owners love fitting noisy pipes to the MT. But when you’re buying, it’s an opportunity to haggle the price down – or insist the original pipes are thrown in, too.
The original is so soft and underdamped many owners fit aftermarket items such as Nitron NTR R1 or K-tech Razor-r Lite. Well worth it.
