Short-but-sweet escapes will keep you sharp in the winter

York is steeped in history but the roads outside its walls are where it’s at if you love biking, as MCN reader Julian Herbert knows all too well. Julian says: “I love this route. It’s scenic with great visibility because of the low hedges, particularly along the stretch from Stamford Bridge. It’s easy to get giddy on the run into Fridaythorpe and I often stop off for a brew at Seaways Café; it’s a must. It’s usually brimming with bikes as it’s a gateway to the coast. From there you can head to Whitby, Bridlington, Scarborough or turn tail and return to York, the choice is yours.”

It’s no wonder they call this place God’s Own Country
