Royal En­field’s two new 650s are a big step for­ward for the firm as they break back into the main­stream with a pair of com­pet­i­tively priced all-rounders. The en­gine is an all-new oil and air-cooled 648cc par­al­lel twin knock­ing out an A2 li­cence-friendly 47bhp and 38ftlb of torque. It’s also been treated to a 270-de­gree fir­ing or­der, which means it sounds and feels more like a V-twin. The six-speed gear­box is also new and boasts a slip-as­sist clutch for a lighter, but more pos­i­tive feel at the lever, mak­ing town work even less of a chore.

The Con­ti­nen­tal GT has long been their most well-known model, with archety­pally Bri­tish café racer styling and a sporty rid­ing po­si­tion. While the new one might look rather sim­i­lar to the 535 ver­sion, the big­ger en­gine and 95% new parts mean it’s a very dif­fer­ent bike in­deed. Join­ing the GT is the In­ter­cep­tor, a more re­laxed and tra­di­tional street bike that takes the Bul­let tem­plate to a classy new level. It dif­fers from the GT by hav­ing wider up­right han­dle­bars, twin seat and larger teardrop tank.
