Norris extends Euro lead with victory

-

Lando Norris increased his lead at the head of the Formula Renault Eurocup standings with victory at the Red Bull Ring.

The 16-year-old started the opening race from the front, having beaten teammate Jehan Daruvala to pole by more than a quarter of a second.

But the Briton found that performance hard to replicate in race conditions and faced a stern challenge from nearest rival Max Defourny, and now leads the championship by 26.5 points.

“We looked comfortable in practice and qualifying but the pace wasn’t quite there in the races which made things difficult,” said Norris. “I had to fight really hard to win the first race –it was a great battle.

“In the circumstances, I’m pretty satisfied with how I raced and obviously pleased to stay at the top of the standings.

“Points-wise it was a really good weekend. I’ve extended my lead at the top of the championship and have a pretty good gap to the second place man.”

Norris finished third in the weekend’s second race, which was won by compatriot Harrison Scott.

Scott was denied a podium by just 0.2s in the first encounter, but held on to win ahead of Defourny and move up to third in the series standings.
