Alfonso Toledano

-

Mexican racing driver Alfonso ‘Alfie’ Toledano, best known for racing in FF1600 in Britain in the early 1980s, has died aged 56.

Toledano arrived in the UK in 1980 as a 20-year-old and raced a PRS in FF1600, suffering several big accidents. But it was the following season that really marked him out as a fresh talent. He joined the works Van Diemen team alongside Ayrton Senna and Enrique Mansilla and was often a match for his rapid team-mates. He finished the year third in the Townsend Thoresen championship.

A move up the single-seater ladder proved difficult but he spent time in British Formula 3 and both FF2000 and F3 in Germany. He later switched to sportscars and contested three rounds of the 1990 World Sports Prototype Championship in a Porsche with Team Davey.

After his return to Mexico he raced from time to time until 2011 but his main focus became organising and promoting single-seater racing in his home country and taking grids to other Latin American nations.

His son, Alfonso Jr, followed his father into racing but a serious accident in 2007 left him with major leg injuries. He has since returned to the sport following a period of recovery.

MN sends its condolences to his family and friends in Mexican motorsport and to those who remember this cheerful character from his time racing in the UK.
