Welsh Junior Jones could take year out for new car

-

Newly crowned Welsh Junior champion Andrew Jones could take a year out of rallying to focus on building a new car.

Jones hadn’t planned to do the whole Vital Equipment-backed series, but found his results were impressive enough to top the young driver section and leave him second in the overall standings after the Nicky Grist Stages earlier this month.

“I did the Cambrian and thought it would be a one-off,” Jones explained. “My dad registered me for the championship and it went from there.”

Jones’ results have been impressive given the car he’s driving, a road rallyspecification Fiat Punto. Now he’ll weigh up the options of a new car.

“It’s just a Pinto built to do road rallies,” added Jones. “I’m going to finish the championship now but I’m not sure what’s going to happen next year. I could take a year out to save some money. I’d like to build a historic car or something similar to what Boyd [Kershaw] has with the Vauxhall and sequential gearbox.”
