Willis said: “On some days everything is right, car, tyres and driver and this was one of those.”

Within 90 minutes of the final set of class runs, the second encounter was ready to unfold with the same quickest three in action. This time Willis would go first. He stunned the spectators with a time inside the old record and set Moran and Menzies the stiffest of challenges.

Moran could not better Willis but was still within the old record, so that would give each an extra point. On the final run of the day, the question was could Menzies top the lot? However, at the first bend his left rear scraped the Victorian brickwork bordering the track and his tyre began to deflate. He recorded the slowest time of either run-off and no points were scored as a result.

Channel Islands drivers were well in the hunt, with Jerseyman Jason Mourant taking a best-yet third and Guernsey’s Darren Warwick fifth and fourth. Will Hall had a better event than recently with sixth and fifth but would have to miss Guernsey (see report below) after being called home on family business.

Spedding, fourth in round 19 with the Raptor proving so suitable for the tight confines of the seaside hill, was sixth in the next round.

Last season’s champion, Alex Summers, had one of his rare 2016 outings, running in his parents’ 1100cc DJ Firehawk. And he was in good form, lowering the 14-yearold class record by 0.83s and was even quicker in the run-off.
