So the questions have been answered and we know where Jenson Button is going next year, and the conclusion is, surprisingly, nowhere. But the decision has been left hanging...will he return? I think I am probably in the minority here, but I hope he doesn’t.

Button knows only too well the full-on demands of being a top line Formula One driver in a team that has had so much success. He knows that it takes huge commitment to get the most from it, and he will also know, in his heart of hearts, that a season-long ride in 2018 is a massive long shot.

He has had a hugely successful career, climbed to the very top of his sport and to see him as a bit-part player would be uncomfortable. Sure, he still has a great deal to offer Mclaren (as the team has rightly spotted) but he should just enjoy the consultancy role and leave the driving side to the fresh wave of talent.

He still has seven races left of this season to enjoy the sensations of driving an F1 car, and to soak up the adulation which will be coming his way. Then, I hope, he leaves his grand prix driving days behind him. Matt James, Editor

After a few weeks of circuit racing-dominated TV guides, rallying returns to the forefront with two major national instalments.

In Ludlow, the BTRDA championship battle took another step towards a conclusion on the Woodpecker Stages, the penultimate round. With some new faces at the front of the field, Luke Francis and Charlie Payne recommenced their fight (Friday, 2235-2305hrs, Motors TV).

Preceding the BTRDA coverage on Motors TV is the Irish Tarmac Championship. The series gets its own TV show for each round, and the event it shared with the British championship in August – the Ulster Rally – is the next instalment (Friday, 2135-2235hrs).

Sticking with the loose, there’s an opportunity to catch up on the British Rallycross Championship from its Bank Holiday meeting at Lydden Hill. An emerging star took an emphatic win (Friday, 2000-2100hrs).
