USA adopts electric rallycross class

-

A North American series will become the first ever electric rallycross championship, due to get underway this Autumn in Las Vegas on October 31.

Run by Speedleague, the new E/RACING category will run on new inner-city built circuits, using cars constructed by Austrian firm STARD, which is owned by WRC podium finisher Manfred Stohl.

STARD revealed the first electric rallycross car last year, and will produce a range of different models for the series as the ‘principal engineer partner’.

Stohl’s concern will also supply support and parts on events. The four-wheeldrive cars produce 500kw, the equivalent of 670 brake horsepower and include a ‘push-to-pass’ feature. STARD is also expected to introduce a four-motor system, the next stage of development from the twin-motor system currently used, in the coming months.

The E/RACING series has been launched by Brian Gale, co-founder of the American-based Global Rallycross Championship, but the two championships are not linked.

Los Angeles and New York are both set to host events.
