BARC Clubmans classes renamed and ‘simplified’ ahead of 2017 campaign
The BARC Clubmans Championship has renamed its class system for 2017 in an attempt to simplify its structure.
Previously, the championship had operated a Clubmans division – split between the Proto and Sports 1600 classes – and a second division for visiting cars from the HSCC’S Classic Clubmans Championship split into four classes –A, B, C and D.
But that structure has now been altered to allow guesting cars to compete in the same class as those committed to the BARC championship.
The CSP1 (Clubmans Sports Prototype) class replaces the Proto category, and will allow for the addition of Class A cars, while CSP2 will replace the Sports 1600 cars and CSP3 will cater for Formula Ford-engined machines.
“The class includes A Class cars, because they’re, at best, 190bhp but have equivalent lap times to the more modern CSP1 cars,” said Clubmans championship co-ordinator Chris Hart. “They’ll all be classed in one, the idea being of course that they can have a dice and a race hopefully.
“Rather than confusing the spectators with all the classes, this will make it nice and simple.
“We’re the more modern formula if you like, but it does enable A Class cars and B Class cars [from the HSCC championship] to come over and compete in the sponsored BARC series.”
The BARC championship will comprise 18 races over six rounds this season, starting at Croft on April 29/30.
