Junior british champion Rokland eyes R5 car for 2019 return to the series

-

New Prestone Motorsport News Junior British Rally champion Steve Rokland is hoping to step up to an R5 for next year’s series.

Rokland won three of the five rounds in the contest this year on his way to a first title outside of his native Norway.

“I would like to do R5 next year in BRC,” he said. “It’s a big budget so we have to work at it. I have meetings signed up and hopefully we can make it happen.”

Rokland confirmed that the calendar was a key reason why he was looking at graduating from the Peugeot 208 R2 which he has driven for five years.

“I think the British Championship is good and there’s really good rallies next year,” he said.

“The mix of surfaces is good and it feels like all the rallies are different, whereas the rallies in Norway are all similar. I’d prefer to be in the British Championship than the Norwegian.”

The 26-year-old was confident he could take the title this year having driven in the BRC in 2012 and 2013.

“We’ve done well. Of course we were in a ditch in Ypres but apart from that I haven’t done any mistakes,” he added. “I’ve won three rounds and we had it all under control last weekend too on Friday before the puncture. I was not sure how our pace was going to be on Tarmac, but Ulster was great. Ypres was the weak point without any testing. Everything was difficult for us there for the first time.”
