NASCAR DEMO FOR GOODWOOD OPENER

Us racers and le Mans Prototypes to stun

- By Paul Lawrence

Le Mans Prototypes and NASCAR monsters will join BMW M1 Procars to form the three high-speed demonstration sessions at the 77th Goodwood Members’ Meeting on April 5/6.

Each group will comprise around a dozen cars running on both days and the sessions will showcase cars never previously seen being driven in anger on the Goodwood circuit.

One of the highlights will be modern generation LMP sports-prototypes tackling the Goodwood track as the light fades on Saturday.

Matt Hearn from Goodwood said: “Le Mans Prototypes are some of the fastest racing cars in the world. We have chosen to run the demo as dusk falls on Saturday to capture some of that Le Mans magic.”

Some of the cars in action are likely to be drawn from the Masters Endurance Legends Series, for cars built up to 2012. New in 2019 will be a concurrent Masters Endurance Legends USA series in North America, created in response to the current level of interest in these cars.

While NASCAR machinery has made solo appearances in the past, more than a dozen cars are expected to deliver a unique UK spectacle. Modern NASCAR engines produce around 850bhp from 5.8-litre V8s, giving the cars a top speed of around 200mph.

“Having over a dozen of them on track at once is sure to stop everyone in their tracks,” said Hearn. “I think for most fans NASCAR is all about the noise, and we will have that in abundance. It certainly won’t be for the faint-hearted!”
