- By Hal Ridge

Lydden Hill will host a round of the new Global Rallycross Europe series next July.

The Kent venue is one of two former World Rallycross Championship circuits that the new series has announced for its 2019 schedule, with an event at Montalegre in Portugal also set to take place on August 10/11.

The series will include two classes, headlined by a single- make category for new four-wheel-drive, spaceframe machines called GRC Titans. Traditional Supercars will also have a class. The event will take place on July 27/28.

Lydden Hill was on the calendar for the first four years of the World Rallycross Championship, until that switched to Silverstone in 2018.

“We are excited to announce that Lydden Hill will host the UK round of the GRC Europe international series in 2019,” said Lydden Hill general manager Hannah Rynston. “As the forefront of rallycross for the past 50 years, and after much investment, Lydden Hill is looking forward to the return of the sport at an international level. We will be pulling out all the stops and look forward to welcoming back thousands of motorsport fans for an impressive mid-season summer event at the home of rallycross.”

Lydden had planned to hold the final round of the American-based Global Rallycross Championship this year until the series folded before the start of the season.

Headed up by MJP Racing owner Max Pucher, GRC Europe is set to run over six weekends, with a number of double header events. “It’s the strategy of MJP Promotions to revitalise what has made rallycross the best driver-focused motorsport and to bring back the drama and action that it used to deliver to its passionate fans,” said Pucher. “Driving the classic tracks with GRC Europe is one important element of achieving that.”

Experienced rallycross team and commercial manager Atte Varsta, who has worked for a number of World RX and Euro RX outfits, including British squad Albatec Racing, has been appointed by the series as commercial director.
