Tanak is the absolute favourite for this season, having demonstrated massive speed through the second half of last year – and he comes with the fastest car. But… it’s not always that simple, is it? Let’s see (but I’d stick a fiver on him).

Jari-matti Latvala (FIN)

#10 Age: 33 Starts: 195 Wins: 18 Titles: 0 Co-driver: Miikka Anttila Last year, and maybe the one before that, were supposed to be his big one. But neither of them – or his last VW campaign in 2016 – turned out to be the year. Latvala’s in great shape with his head in the right place and plenty of speed, and he’s found a good way with the team. Keep all of that together and he’ll be a force. This year? Definitely maybe.

Kris Meeke (GBR)

#5 Age: 39 Starts: 91 Wins: 5 Titles: 0 Co-driver: Seb Marshall An unexpected eightmonth vacation has left Meeke more relaxed coming into the start of a season than ever before. Post-portugal, it looked like this might all be over and maybe Meeke’s laissez-faire (apologies for the French, Kris) attitude has helped with his approach to this year. Whatever, he’s a potential winner everywhere.
