NATIONAL MOTORSPORT SET TO RESTART ON JULY 4
Motorsport UK confirms that organisers can start applying for permits for race meetings
Motorsport UK has confirmed national racing is set to recommence on July 4 and applications for event permits were due to open on Monday this week (June 1).
UK motorsport’s national governing body has suspended its sanctioned events until June 30, though recently issued guidelines for how postsuspension race events can be run safely amid coronavirus health considerations.
Now it has made its latest step in gradually getting racing back on. In July all events holding a Grade C or D Championship permit, considered club championships, will be eligible to race.
However to reduce potential travel, no national or British championship events – those with a Grade A or B Championship permit – will be allowed to race during that month.
All events must be held behind closed doors and appoint a Covid-19 officer to ensure compliance with guidelines.
Also, to ensure sufficient volunteers and officials are available, there will be a limit on the number of event permits issued for July to 50% of those in the corresponding month of 2019. However, Motorsport UK has told Motorsport News that this last measure is a “fluid situation” depending on events’ability to run and the not to not overstretch volunteer and other resources.
The body added that it will have a better idea in the early part of this month of which events it can allocate permits to, and outlined that all applications for July it had received up that point in the latter part of last week will be issued a permit, subject to MUK regulations and guidance.
Motorsport UK chairman David Richards said: “It is now right that we move in step [with government easing of restrictions] and introduce the next stage of our phased restart.
“We always said that, when the conditions were right, we would take a responsible decision to resume motorsport in order to sustain the sport, jobs and the economy.
“We have explained our plans to government and are fortunate that motorsport takes place outdoors over large controlled spaces.”
