BRITISH RX HEADS TO SPA FRANCORCHAMPS IN 2021
Six rounds across five different nations in store for rallycross battlers this year
The British Rallycross Championship 5 Nations Trophy will run a six-event calendar this year, including a finale on the SpaFrancorchamps layout in Belgium.
BRX organisers were forced to scrap plans to run at a range of venues both on the UK mainland and abroad last year due to the coronavirus pandemic, with the three rounds that did take place all held at Lydden Hill.
Series bosses are now intending to revisit plans for the 5 Nations structure, with a calendar that features rounds at Lydden Hill (England), Pembrey (Wales),
Knockhill (Scotland),
Mondello Park (Ireland) and
Spa (Belgium). The headline British Rallycross Championship Supercar class will run over seven rounds, with one of the six events to operate as a double-header.
The series will begin later than usual, with the opening event held at Lydden Hill in late May on the month’s second Bank Holiday weekend in a bid to avoid Covid19 related restrictions.
That means for the second year in a row, British Championship rallycross won’t take place on its traditional Easter Bank Holiday weekend. In a further significant shift to the traditional schedule, Lydden Hill will not host the August Bank Holiday event either with that honour falling to Pembrey in Wales.
The penultimate round, also at Lydden, will run into the dark following the successful event held in December, which was partially held under floodlights. The final round at Spa will be the first time the British series has raced at the Belgian Formula 1 venue – the rallycross layout was introduced to the World Rallycross Championship in 2019 – although British RX has previously held rounds at Maasmechelen, and over the Dutch border at Valkenswaard in the last decade.
Further details about which rounds the other classes on the 5 Nations BRX roster will run at are expected in due course.
