BREXIT ISSUES COULD COMPLICATE IRISH HOPES FOR BRC ENTRIES

-

Extra paperwork needed to move cars between Northern Ireland and the UK mainland due to Brexit is deterring some from committing to the British Rally Championship.

Motorsport UK updated its ‘Brexit Transition’ guidelines when the UK left the European Union last December, however Jonny Greer believes further clarification is needed on many of the points.

“No-one seems to be able to say with any certainty what we, as competitors, would – or would not – have to do to get a rally car across,” Greer told Motorsport News. “The potential worst-case scenario would be having to fill in a Carnet form every time we go to the UK mainland with a rally car.

“If that is the case, we would have to list all of the goods we are taking out of Northern Ireland, as well as the value of the goods and potentially list the country of origin. The cost is around £300-£400 per Carnet but the paperwork is the real issue as far as I’m concerned. Some more clarification would be good before I’d even consider doing the British Rally Championship.”

With no Irish Tarmac Championship in 2021,

BRC organisers hoped many of that series’ big hitters would migrate across to the mainland, although Alastair Fisher and Sam Moffett have both ruled out such an idea to MN.

Moffett’s younger brother, Josh, does intend to register for the series however in a Hyundai i20 R5 and looks set to be joined by Desi Henry. “The Oulton Park news is interesting,” said Henry. “I had intended on going to the Nicky Grist Stages with the Hyundai, which is ready to go. I’m really looking forward to going rallying again, so hopefully things keep moving in the right direction with Covid.”
