FURTHER DELAY FOR CLASSIC LE MANS AS 2021 EDITION IS CANCELLED

New date set in July 2022 for biennial historic extravaganza at La Sarthe

The Le Mans Classic, one of the biggest events on the historic motorsport calendar, has been cancelled for 2021 in the face of the ongoing pandemic situation in France.

The 10th biennial event was originally planned for July 2020 but postponed for a year as Covid took hold across Europe. Now, the promoters have confirmed that it has been further postponed until July 2022. As well as running in 2022, plans are in place for the Classic to also run in 2023 to mark the centenary celebrations of the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Typically, the event that features a series of one-hour races over a 24-hour period attracts dozens of UK competitors in cars of the type that raced at Le Mans from the 1920s to the 1980s Group C era.

A press statement said: “Due to the more than capricious changes in the constraints applied to largescale events, Peter Auto and the Automobile Club de l’Ouest were forced to postpone once again the 10th edition of

Le Mans Classic to the first or second weekend of July 2022.”

Patrick Peter of event promoter Peter Auto added: “The maximum figures of people imposed by the government do not allow us to maintain this event on the initial dates. Moreover, even if it has been considered, a closed session would not do justice to this event and would considerably reduce the beautiful tribute to the great history of endurance. Le Mans Classic without public, without exhibitors and without clubs is not Le Mans Classic.”
