MITCHELL WANTING MORE AFTER STRONG COMBE BOW

-

Historics ace Ben Mitchell in more modern machinery made a competitive start to his Castle Combe Formula Ford 1600 campaign on Easter Monday.

Mitchell is competing in a Van Diemen RF99 raced previously by triple Combe champion Josh Fisher who is unable to participate this year.

Having driven the car for the first time in Thursday’s preevent test, Mitchell bagged fourth in the first race just

3.7 seconds shy of the victor, reigning Walter Hayes Trophy winner Oli White, then finished third in race two under half a second off winner White.

Mitchell told MN: “It’s a smaller operating window than something like the Merlyn [Mitchell’s historic FF1600 car], in the Van

Diemen you can’t really afford to put a foot wrong.

“The car’s very well sorted, it’s just a case of getting to grips with it. And at Castle Combe particularly learning what makes a difference.

“We want to be at the sharp end and see where we pan out in the overall championship. If we can come out on top it’d be great but it’s a stepby-step process.”
