THORNE PONDERS HYUNDAI FOR RALLYCROSS BID
Two-time British Rallycross Super1600 champion and Supercar podium finisher Jack Thorne has revealed aspirations to race a Hyundai Supercar in rallycross.
Thorne lifted the British RX Super 1600 spoils in 2014 and 2018. He bought an ex-Olsbergs MSE Ford Fiesta towards the end of 2019 and finished second on his debut in the car at Lydden Hill. He had planned to race in 5 Nations BRX last year before it was decimated by the global health pandemic.
His only competitive outing since 2019 has been in a Hyundai i20 R5 in the Motorsport News Circuit Rally Championship round at Donington Park in December, when he was 20th overall after problems with the turbo boost.
Now, though, he has got eyes set on using a Hyundai for rallycross. Thorne said: “We do a lot with Hyundai road cars in our garage and
I love them on the road. Now I’ve got the rally car and I can’t describe how that is to drive – it’s unreal. I’d love to make something happen where I could use a Hyundai in rallycross.
“The Ford Fiesta is for sale, but [it could be that we] use all the running gear from the OMSE car and put that into a Hyundai bodyshell ourselves to get going.”
