TURKEY STEPS UP FOR F1 AGAIN AS CANADA IS BINNED

-

The Turkish Grand Prix will return to the Formula 1 schedule this year as the Canadian Grand Prix has been axed due to the global health pandemic.

The race at Istanbul Park, which was welcomed back onto the F1 roster last season for the first time since 2011 amid the cancelled grands prix, is due to take over what would have been the Montreal slot on June 11-13.

Travel restrictions in Canada require a 14-day quarantine which mean the grand prix has been axed for a second season in a row. It’s deal to host the grand prix has been extended by those two years through to 2031.

F1 president Stefano Domenicali said: “While it is disappointing we cannot be in Canada this season, we are excited to confirm that Turkey will host a grand prix in 2021 after an amazing race last season. I want to thank the promoter and authorities in Canada for all of their efforts in recent weeks but the travel situation made our plans impossible.”

There is still some uncertainty about the likelihood of a Japanese Grand Prix, with the government in the Far Eastern country recently imposing emergency measures in two of the country’s major cities. Australia, Singapore and Brazil are also under the spotlight.
