CAVE UNSURE ON FULL SEASON IN BRITISH CHAMPIONSHIP CONTEST

The three-time British runner-up is trying to secure the funding for the next six rounds

Tom Cave has told Motorsport News the prospect of him completing the rest of the British Rally Championship season after this weekend’s opening round is unlikely.

Cave isn’t on the entry for Monday’s Neil Howard Stages at Oulton Park as he doesn’t have the budget in place to commit to a full season.

The Welshman, who has finished as runner-up in the

BRC three times, says he is still “very motivated and passionate about trying to do an event or two if we can this year.”

He told MN: “We’re working on things still, whether it would be for the rest of the BRC is probably highly unlikely. Maybe the odd event here and there, if we do get a budget together we’ll probably just pick and choose events to do and go and target them but being honest with you now at the moment there’s nothing in place.

It’s very much up in the air. Hopefully we can do some events and you’ll see us out there at some point during the year.”

Cave’s regular co-driver Dale Furniss will compete with Desi Henry on the opening round but has assured Cave that he will return to partner him if plans begin to align. If Cave can’t secure a bigger BRC programme, the Nicky Grist Stages, Trackrod and Cambrian Rallies would be of particular interest for one-off outings.

“Nicky Grist is probably top of the list because it’s in south Wales, it’s an event I’ve done before on stages I know well and the Trackrod as well is an event

I’ve won before, I really enjoy the rally and I’ve never been there in a four-wheel-drive car so I’ve always wanted to go and do that one again,” Cave said.

“And the Cambrian up in north Wales as well. So if we had options to do those rallies those are ones we’d choose to do, but that’s very much far away at the moment.”
