WORLD RX TWEAKED IN AN EFFORT TO LURE FANS BACK
The opening round of the World Rallycross Championship has been postponed and will now take place at Barcelona, Spain on
July 23-24.
The Hell circuit in Norway had been set to host the season opener next month but that round has been cancelled due of Covid19 restrictions in the country.
The second round was pencilled to take place in Sweden, but the Holjes round has now moved from its traditional July date until mid-August in a bid to allow fans to attend, an objective for all rounds for new World RX commercial rights holder, Rallycross Promoter GmbH.
A statement from the promoter read: “Following close consultation with event organisers
and the relevant authorities in each of the host countries, an updated calendar has been put together that not only visits some of the best rallycross tracks in the world, but also maximises the likelihood of welcoming fans on-site where possible.”
The Montalegre circuit in Portugal, last run in the series in 2018, will return to the roster to host the final round, while the Nurburgring will hold its maiden World RX event just a week after the season-opener in Spain.
“We all acknowledge the positive trend over the summer of the pandemic in Europe,” said Rallycross Promoter
GmbH executive director Arne Dirks. “That’s why, after having liaised closely with our key stakeholders, we have taken the deliberate decision to delay the start of the campaign in the hope of being able to open the gates to fans at as many rounds as is feasible and safe, and have assembled what we believe is an irresistible blend of iconic rallycross tracks and state-of-theart modern venues.”
