BELL AND FERGUSON ARE KINGS OF THE SWINGERS

-

Tom Bell and Joe Ferguson danced clear of a brilliant five-Mini scrap, besting Ralph and Charlie Budd in Group 1 as sensational Swinging ’60s races were the cream of CSCC’s Donington crop.

Simeon Chodosh in his thuggish Chevrolet Corvette repelled Steve Hodges’ Lotus 7 in an almighty Group 2 dust-up. Both were penalised for rejoining before the mandated two-minute pitstops were served, thus Malcolm Johnson – after several excursions – was declared winner.

Wayne Crabtree won the first two Special Saloon & Modsports races, but his Subaru-powered Ford RS200 clone expired in the finale, leaving Malcom Harding a maiden victor in his stunning

Smith & Jones-engined Escort Mk2, shadowed by Joe Ward’s legendary Baby Bertha.

Mark Chilton aced Future Classics, narrowly beating

Aston and Tony Blake’s TVR Tuscan. Jamie Boot was unrivalled in Classic K.

Stonking BMWs won Saturday’s New Millennium and Open events. Darren Fielding (E46 GTR) took the former after Mark Wyatt faded in the Interceptor E92 in which Russell Humphrey led. Matty Evans’V8-engined 1M Coupe triumphed over Michael Pensavalle’s E46 M3 in the Open.

Despite being clattered during lappery at Redgate, Evans looked to have doubled-up in the Slicks Series, but a two-second penalty for a short pitstop dropped him behind Nigel Jenkins, whose Ferrari lost its rear bumper in a first corner melee which derailed poleman Kevin Jones’Noble.

Junior rally convert Tom Delaney led the Turbo Tin Tops brilliantly, but was denied a debut victory when a sensor put his BMW Mini Cooper S RS6 into limp mode. He finished third behind Carl Chambers and

John Hammersley, censured for skittling Charlie NewtonDarby’s Mini R53 into the Old Hairpin gravel during lappery.

John Cutmore topped both Magnificent Sevens bouts. A spinning Tim Davis took out BOSS team-mate Colin Watson while essaying to grab the opener’s lead. A short stop penalty then undid Jonny Pittard’s first win glory, leaving him ninth. Pittard was catching Cutmore when the sequel finished under caution.

A 30-second success delay for Tin Top victory at Thruxton looked just beyond Andrew Windmill until Nigel Tongue (Peugeot 306) tripped leader Martin Addison (106) up, having already attracted a pit penalty.
