Automotive-run Van Diemen, eventually selected first gear but he had already been swamped. His comeback drive was the stuff of legend and he diced mightily with his rivals to return to top spot by powering ahead of Jose Cordova and the factory Van Diemen of Derek Higgins. It was one of the best finals ever.
