EX-GERRY MARSHALL CAPRI TO RETURN TO COMPETITION AT GOODWOOD
Members’ Meeting outing for Group 1 Ford under Donaldson’s ownership
A 1981 Ford Capri that was raced by Gerry Marshall and Graham ‘Skid’ Scarborough will make its competitive comeback this season at the Goodwood Members’ Meeting in April this year.
The three-litre car was built in time for that season’s Willhire 24 Hour race at Snetterton and it finished second in the endurance event in its Autoplan
Warranties colours. The machine has now been purchased by historic racer Andrew Donaldson, who aims to run the car at the West Sussex showpiece alongside British Touring Car Championship racer Dan Welch.
The car, which went on to multiple Production championship race successes, was sold to Ireland and then bought back by Scarborough in 1996. He rebuilt the rear-wheel-drive Capri and raced it in the Classic Saloon Car
Club’s Group 1 Championship.
It was refreshed again in 2018 and has only done three races since then.
Donaldson said he was excited about his new arrival, which he plans to race in Historic Racing Drivers’ Club events as well as at other special meetings.
“I have all the race results and history of the car: it was one of the most successful production saloon racers of its day in the 1980s,” said Donaldson. “I was delighted to get an invitation into the Gordon Spice Trophy race at Goodwood. It is going to be something very special.”
As well as having a collection of other historic cars, including a Lister Storm, Donaldson will take part in selected rallies in 2024 too. He will race the Capri at Goowdood on the Saturday before heading to Anglesey to contest the SMC Stages in a Lotus Sunbeam on Sunday, meaning Welch will drive the Ford alone.
