Invitation to saddle up

Cyclists urged to sign up for ninth annual Poppyscotland Sportive event

-

HUNDREDS of cyclists will once more flock to East Lothian in September as Poppyscotland’s annual Sportive returns.

The charity is calling on cyclists to saddle up and support Scotland’s armed forces community by participating in the event.

On September 22, the Sportive is gearing up for its ninth year and is expected to attract hundreds of cyclists to three picturesque routes spanning East Lothian, Midlothian and the Scottish Borders.

The event welcomes tandems and e-bikes, ensuring that everyone can join in the spirit of camaraderie.

As one of Poppyscotland’s most important fundraising events outside the Scottish Poppy Appeal, the Sportive has already made a significant impact, raising more than £300,000 to provide lifechanging support to present and past members of the armed forces and their families.

At this year’s launch, Tom Nash, an RAF veteran, spoke of his enjoyment while taking part in last year’s event.

He said: “Last year, I tried my first Poppyscotland Sportive as a BMXer, seeking a new challenge.

“The event was superbly organised in a stunning location, with abundant food at rest stops.

“The marshals’ support was fantastic, making the experience truly memorable. I’d definitely participate again.”

Starting and finishing in Prestonpans, the three routes range from 45 to 102 miles, taking in the coastal road to North Berwick, then looping round the East Lothian countryside.

More adventurous riders will cycle over the Lammermuirs, dipping down to Chirnside and Duns, in the Scottish Borders, before heading onward to Midlothian.

Gordon Michie, head of fundraising and learning at Poppyscotland, urged cyclists to secure their spots early.

He said: “The Sportive continues to captivate cyclists year after year, and we’re looking forward to meeting new riders, as well as welcoming back previous participants.

“The event is ideal for riders of all ability and ages, including tandems and e-bikes, and numbers are managed to maintain the event’s unique atmosphere.

“Every penny raised from sponsorship helps provide vital welfare support for our armed forces families across Scotland, from mobility and mental health advice to housing and financial support, and so much more.”

The Sportive is an “open road” cycling event, meaning that no roads will be closed, to minimise disruption to the public.
