Young boxers now pack a punch

-

A POPULAR boxing club has been floored by a generous donation.

Bronx Boxing Club in Tranent, which offers boxing classes to those aged seven and over, has received a dozen pairs of punchbag mitts thanks to a donation by construction company The JR Group.

The boxing club was established in 2010 by ex-boxer Alexander Brown with the aim of igniting the passion he had for boxing as a youngster in the community’s children.

The donation will now enable the club to provide its younger participants with mitts to train in.

Richard Snaithe, lead coach at Bronx Boxing Club, said: “This generous donation from the team at The JR Group will enable us to ensure we have plenty of boxing gloves for our younger members.

“Our team is passionate about the sport and we love watching that same passion grow in the youngsters we train, with many going on to become champions and medallists.

“The coaches volunteer their time at the club so any equipment donation is gratefully received to help run our classes.”

The club has recently had three boxers selected to train at Boxing Scotland’s National High Performance Centre in Glasgow to represent Scotland in international tournaments.

Gayle O’Hear, community engagement officer at The JR Group, which was founded in Glasgow nearly 30 years ago, said: “Whenever we start creating new developments across Scotland, it’s hugely important for us to also support the communities in which we build.

“That’s why we are delighted to be able to support Bronx Boxing Club, which is adjacent to the homes we are building.

“It is a fantastic local club which welcomes lots of children from the community and provides them with a hobby that is centred on exercise and keeping healthy.”
