Di­a­betes is a con­di­tion in which it is dif­fi­cult to con­trol the level of glu­cose (su­gar) in the blood­stream. Type 1 di­a­betes tends to present in child­hood and re­quires treat­ment with in­sulin, while type 2 di­a­betes tends to oc­cur later in life and is as­so­ci­ated with be­ing over weight. Both types of di­a­betes in­crease your risk of car­dio­vas­cu­lar disease.

Type 2 di­a­betes is treated with life­style mea­sures of weight loss and healthy diet as well as var­i­ous med­i­ca­tions. The most com­monly used med­i­ca­tion is met­formin, though oth­ers may also be re­quired.
