WHY NOT VENTURE INTO WILD WATER?

-

If you’re a confident swimmer, why not take your exercise outside with a spot of wild swimming?

“Wild swimming is an exhilarating experience,” says Ella Foote of the Outdoor Swimming Society. “There are always dangers, which you need to be aware of, but you’re surrounded by the natural environment with its wildlife, ever-changing weather and the feeling of sand or silt between your toes.

“I never regret a swim. I can go to the river feeling terrible and always come out feeling wonderful.”

The Outdoor Swimming Society’s website – WWW. OUTDOORSWIMMINGSOCIETY.COM – has a lot of helpful advice about wild swimming while their online map at WILDSWIM.COM highlights places in Britain’s rivers, lakes and seas where people enjoy wild swimming.

“All you need is a good swimsuit, goggles, a bright swimming cap so you can be seen and a towel,” continues Ella. “But whether you’re wild swimming with friends or alone, make sure someone knows where you are and when you’ll be back.”

If you like the thought of swimming in the open but enjoy your comforts, there are more than 120 public outdoor swimming pools or lidos in the UK – many heated, and in stunning art deco buildings with cafés and sun terraces.

“Across the UK, communities and volunteers are coming together to save their local outdoor pools,” says Gill Wright of campaign group Historic Pools of Britain. “When you swim in a historic lido, you’re surrounded by beautiful views and generations of memories.”

Another way to add a new element to your regular swim is to join a club at your local indoor pool. This should improve your technique, is a great way to meet others – and could even lead to competing in galas!

Alternatively, how about signing up for a charity swimathon?

“I swam 200 lengths, which is just over three miles, in three hours, two minutes and raised £357 for Marie Curie,” explains Julie Lancaster (51). “I’m not a fast swimmer but I’m consistent – and being sponsored really motivated me. I’d definitely do it again.”
