Money Talk

There’s no shortage of companies competing to cover our phones, laptops, tablets and cameras. Gadget cover is big business, but check if you’re already protected or you could be wasting your money.

Check if you have accidental damage cover on your home insurance, and for anything you take beyond your front door, check for cover away from home and any payout limits.

Travel insurance covers your belongings on holiday, but many policies have limited cover, so if you lose your phone or your laptop’s damaged, your home policy may offer greater protection, although claiming this way may mean higher premiums in the future.

If you have multiple gadgets, or pricey ones that exceed home insurance limits you could consider stand alone gadget cover. This costs from around £100 a year and providers include WWW.GADGETCOVER. and WWW.UK.PROTECTYOURBUBBLE.COM

Cover from WWW.INMYBAG.CO costs more, from around £150 a year, but it claims to replace lost, broken or stolen gadgets within 24 hours wherever you are in the world. I couldn’t imagine being on a beach on a far flung island and someone flying in James Bond style to hand deliver a replacement phone or tablet! So I tackled the InMyBag team who admitted there may be “difficulties and exceptions” in some areas. In reality, if abroad, you may be given the money to buy a replacement rather than having one delivered. But if you’re at home when you have a laptop or phone crisis, delivery or collecting a replacement may be easier.
