WINTER CHILL

-

Toronto has bags of appeal as a Canadian Christmas shopping break. Peruse the designer shops of “Mink Mile”, ice skate beneath the stars in Nathan Phillips Square – it’s even open on Christmas Day – and head up the enormous CN Tower for superb city views. A trip out to Niagara Falls is a must, particularly around this time of year when the Winter Festival of Lights illuminates the famous falls (November 18, 2017 to January 31, 2018), and if you’re still around on New Year’s Day then don’t miss Toronto’s annual Polar Bear Dip – a chilly plunge into Lake Ontario. SEETORONTONOW.COM The snow-covered Swiss Alps are a beautiful backdrop for a festive break. There’s skiing of course, but if you prefer wintry walks in the mountains or fancy trying tobogganing then head for the Jungfrau Region which offers plenty of both, including the Alps’ longest toboggan run. Alternatively, book a festive tour as part of a group. Arena Travel has a packed 5-night trip available (departing December 23, prices from £1,079 including Eurostar travel) with highlights like Christmas Eve in Bern, a Christmas Day horsedrawn carriage ride in Interlaken and a memorable Boxing Day journey into the mountains aboard the Glacier Express.
