Brain Protecting Foods
“There is increasing evidence that polyphenols, naturally occurring chemicals in plants, may reduce the risk of dementia,” says Professor Rayman. That’s because they are antioxidants and anti-inflammatory so they prevent damage to brain cells and improve blood flow to the brain. “Some may act on specific brain regions to improve memory and learning and stimulate new connections between brain cells.
“Food rich in polyphenols also often contain beneficial vitamins, minerals and fibre, as well as generally being low in calories,” adds Professor Rayman. These include berries, vegetables, peas, beans, lentils, wholegrain cereals, cocoa and dark chocolate, red wine, grapes, citrus fruit, coffee, green tea, soya and pistachios.
