ACHILLES HEEL

People with type 2 diabetes are at risk of nerve damage, especially in their feet and lower legs, if blood sugar isn’t controlled. New evidence shows it also increases stiffness of the Achilles tendon at the back of the heel. This makes walking harder work and reduces mobility. But the good news is that it also gives scientists a target for new treatments that could ease pain and stiffness.

Pharmacist­s are an invaluable member of the healthcare team. And with GP demand rising all the time, everyone from doctors to government is calling for more help to support pharmacist­s in providing advice and treatment for minor ailments. Plans to give pharmacist­s access to your medical records is a major step forward, allowing them to make recommenda­tions more safely.

Who said getting older is all bad? The Office for National Statistics says over 65s are more likely to be satisfied with their income and leisure time than any other age group. They’re also more likely to feel they can cope financiall­y, and have a great sense of belonging in their neighbourh­ood. Let’s bring back some good oldfashion­ed values and get to know our neighbours.
