The custom of using oversize bottles, often named after biblical characters, was started by champagne traders in the 19th century when the wine became internationally popular. Whilst a magnum holds a modest 2 bottles and a jeroboam a generous 4, there are 13 sizes in total with the largest, a melchisedech, holding a whopping 40 bottles – that would really make the party go with a swing!
