I Hate Feeling Like An Inadequate Gran

-

How do I stop myself feeling so inadequate compared to my grandson’s other grandparents? They’re fairly well off and often splash the cash when it comes to treating him but I just don’t have the money to compete with trips to Legoland or EuroDisney. I love my grandson dearly, but feel so sad that there isn’t more I can do for him. I tried talking to my son about this, but he just said to stop worrying as my grandson doesn’t care about any of that.

It’s so easy, and yet so sad, to feel inadequate compared to others who have more disposable cash – and I’m sure it’s even more depressing to feel there may be a competition based on your grandson’s affection. Time to get real methinks!

A child is less likely to be aware of any notion of monetary “status” – and be far more interested in having fun, loving and happy times with his grandparents. Money cannot buy

everything – a hilarious trip to the seaside on a bus or a frantic but fun game of cards by the fire, for instance, will make up his happy memories, just as much as that trip to EuroDisney.

The point is this: small children cannot differentiate between cost and only feel emotion. Each set of grandparents are unique and special to the child in their own way.

I’m sure you already do many wonder ful things with your grandson. Your son tells you not to worry and it is already a known fact that your grandson does not notice – as you have been told this!

You give your grandson your love and he will of course feel that. You also give him time and attention. Just be available and your place in his heart is assured. Luckily, it really is that simple!
