I want to join a gym – what should I think about? ✦ Slow down! Heaps of us dash out to sign up in January, but by March the only thing losing weight is our bank balance!

Lots of gyms charge one-off joining fees plus a monthly membership. You may be tied in for at least a year, even if you stop going. And it’s worth waiting until February for better offers or deals. I’d suggest pay-as-you-go gyms or places where you just give a month’s notice. Ask for a free pass for the day so you can check out the facilities first.
