Getting To Know…
Arabella Weir
● I was mad keen to do TwoDoors Down! When I read the very first script, I thought, I’ve literally waited my whole career to do this. It was just a shame none of my Scottish grannies or parents were still alive. The characters are very Scottish but I think the humour would translate on any street. It’s that universal idea of being irritated by people you can’t get away from, but are ver y intimate with. ● There are three women over 55 in lead parts and there’s a gay couple, who are just a gay couple. The humour isn’t driven by, “Hilarious! They’re a gay couple.” Or, “Hilarious! They’re three women.” ● If a young actress today has any of the experiences I had with men in the ’70s or early ’80s, it’s now regarded by all as unacceptable and she has somewhere to complain. You can no longer get away with, “Oh it was a joke! She needs to lighten up!” ● At my age, it’s the little things that drive you crazy! So, let’s just talk about the big picture, right? The radiator’s not working. Never mind Brexit; my radiator isn’t working! If Theresa May doesn’t get round here right now with a plumber… it’s lots of things – Syria, Yemen. I do what I can for charity, but that’s all a bit depressing. However, it’s the micro and the macro comparison that gives you perspective.
