Five Weddings
Cary’s first marriage was to Virginia Cherrill in 1934 but she left a few months later and there followed a bitter divorce case. In 1942, he married Barbara Hutton, one of the wealthiest women in the world, heiress to the Woolworth empire. When they divorced in 1945, Cary refused any financial settlement as he didn’t want to be accused of marrying for money. Wife number three was Betsy Drake, co-star in two of his films, and this marriage lasted for 13 years, until 1962. His fourth marriage was in 1965 to Dyan Cannon, who give birth to their daughter, Jennifer, the following year. They divorced after only three years. Cary did not marry again until 1981, when he wed Barbara Harris, to whom he remained happily married until his death in 1986.
