I live in the south-west and have flown from Bristol in the past which meant changing at Rome. This time, I chose Gatwick because of the direct flight to Bari, the nearest airport to Matera. It was then a 45 minute trip by taxi. However, you can fly directly or indirectly from most UK airports.
