UNDERGROUND SWIMMING

I swim every day at home so when I heard there were natural thermal baths at the Hotel Locanda di San Martino, I headed straight there. Bliss! There are three sections of underwater caves carved out of limestone rock and filled with blue water. There was also a hydromassage and a hammam. I also loved the spa at the Hotel Gatti with its pool, Turkish baths, steam room and relaxing area for herbal tea. WWW.LOCANDADISANMARTINO.IT. WWW. PALAZZOGATTINI.IT. Staff at both were extremely friendly and spoke English. This isn’t always the case in Matera so take your guidebook as well as warm clothes for chilly evenings.
