A daily meal lets Yolamo read – his favouriteit thithingg tto ddo! !

Each morning 14-year-old Yolamo from Zambia wakes at sunrise to sweep his house and fetch water before going to school.

Yolamo’s mother has passed away and he lives with his sisters and father, who works as a farmer. The family struggle to make ends meet and often Yolamo arrives at his primary school with an empty stomach.

The nutritious daily school meal he receives from the charity Mary’s Meals is so important to him as it gives the teenager the energy to study in class and also to play in his village football team, after school hours.

Yolamo said, “I like to eat Mary’s Meals so I can be strong.

“I want to be a doctor when I finish school because I want to be able to give people medicine who need it.”

He added, “School is important because here I can learn how to read. Reading makes me happy. I read everything that I can.”

Mary’s Meals has been working with communities in Zambia since 2014 and is now feeding more than 92,000 children there, like Yolamo, every school day.

It hopes to reach many more through its Double The Love appeal.

The UK government is matching public donations to the Double The Love appeal, up to £2 million, until March 1, 2019, to transform the lives of hungry children in Zambia with a nutritious meal in school, enabling them to gain an education and look with hope towards a poverty-free future.

Magnus MacFarlane-Barrow, founder and global CEO of Mary’s Meals, said, “We are incredibly grateful to all our wonderful supporters who never cease to amaze us with their love and kindness.

“Every gift we receive to our Double The Love appeal will help us fill the empty stomachs of more hungry children and give them hope for a brighter future.”

UK Aid Match brings charities, the British public and the UK government together to collectively change the lives of some of the world’s poorest and most vulnerable people.
